	A long time ago, Jekkanai, the patron guardian of a world, fought shadowy creatures called Sethers who sought to take it over. Jekkanai won, sealing the Sethers away, since they could not be killed. Now, nearly a thousand years later, Jekkanai is nowhere to be found, and the phoenixes are plotting to free the Sethers and take over this world, as part of their war against the dragons. The dragons, understaffed and with only a few of their people stationed on this world, assign an operative barely out of the Academy to attempt to hold back the phoenixes while they search for Jekkanai, who can seal the Sethers away again if they are freed. Only Jekkanai knows how — or so they believe. But soon things begin to spiral out of control, as even the phoenixes lose what little influence they had over their former allies. The Sethers are angry after their long imprisonment, and they want revenge. As plans fall apart, the fate of this world falls into the hands of a few whose motives lie in the past — in the first war . . .
